Coldplay had initially been accused of plagiarizing Creaky Boards, but that was later retracted. Now guitarist Joe Satriani is suing Coldplay claiming that 'Viva La Vida' uses "substantial original portions" from his instrumental "If I Could Fly" and he seeks "any and all profits" from the band. Paste points to a mash-up of the two tracks which can be heard below along with his Joe Satriani's 'If I Could Fly'. This lawsuit comes so covieniently after Coldplay were nominated for some Grammys.Coldplay & Joe Satriani - Viva La Vida vs If I Could Fly (Done by Caedmon)

Not that I like Coldplay or anything, but it seems to me that that tune (both Coldplay's and Joe Satriani's) is a fairly standard melody, and I'm not surprised it's been found that two tunes are similar. I bet there are more tunes the same as those. And if Satriani doesn't want his tunes to be similar to anyone else's he should do something a bit more unusual and interesting. Cos I'm sure Coldplay heard his song and thought: "we should borrow that". [sarcasm].
It doesn't seem to me that Satriani's solo is anything I haven't heard before, either. What a tool.
you are a tool because satriani is probably one of the best guitarists alive

if coldplay "stole satriani's song" why the hell would satriani wait until it made millions of dollars to complain. it has nothing to do with the integrity of his music, it has to do with greed. for every song there is another song with similar sounds, the fact that when a song gets popular someone tries to profit from it is really sad.
john mayer is the best alive today you moron. ENOUGH said
The reason it took so long for Satriani to complain is because he tried to contact Coldplay first but they ignored him and then when Satriani had enough of chasing them he only had court action left to take. When i heared this song i lost alot of respect for them as musicians. I feel that Coldplays ignorance towards Satriani only incriminated them futher. There are also simularities between Coldplays "Talk" and Kraftwerks "Computer Love". I also have to agree that Joe Satriani is one of the best guitarists in the world, anyone with a basic understanding of music theory will tell you the same also.
Liking or not liking Joe Satriani's musical style is irrelevant.
The basic melody of the Coldplay song is ascloseasthis to the Satriani melody.
Too close for coincidence? Maybe they heard it in the background and unconciously lifted it. It happens. Just ask the Red Hot Chilli Peppers how they managed to imagine the same melody as Tom Petty. Some fans of some bands are blind to any misdemeanours, deliberate or otherwise, by their heroes. Me? I loathe Coldplay and don't have much time for Satriani's fretboard histrionics, but I know both are popular. However, in this Case Joe is the wronged party by a country mile.
