While speaking to the San Francisco Examiner Andrew VanWyngarden said that the band has learned how to surf during the recording sessions for their second album. While the album is being recorded in Malibu, CA the band had decided that it was a good idea to take advantage of their location and learn the local sport. He told the San Francisco Examiner: I'm from New York, where you can go surfing but it's more of an excursion and you have to go all the way out to Rockaway or Jones Beach. But I finally did it, I'm happy I did, and Malibu's where I figured it all out. I’d never surfed, but for that album, I was dreaming about surfing a lot.
He even talked about the recording of the second album tentatively titled "Congratulations". MGMT are working with Pete “Sonic Boom” Kember from Spacemen 3 as producer and Royal Trux's singer Jennifer Herrema's vocals are featured on the album. It is expected to be released in early 2010. VanWyngarden talked about the album's title track:The song ‘Congratulations’ itself is pretty dark. It’s us trying to deal with all the craziness that’s been going on since our last album took off. Sometimes it just doesn’t feel natural.
