What's Coming In 2011 Open Source CMS

Normally in this space we look back over the current month and forward into the next month, keeping you up to date with the open source CMS and other related projects that might interest you. Like last year, we're taking a look back at 2011 and into 2012 for some extra insights into what's to come.

Plans for 2012

Many of our questions centered around plans for 2012. When asked about geographical growth targets for the next year, North America (79% of respondents) and Europe (84% of respondents) were the two highest priority areas by far. The largest medium priority targets were South America (61% of respondents), Asia Pacific/Oceania (53% of respondents), and the Middle East (42% of respondents).
In particular after establishing their European headquarters in Amsterdam in July 2011, DotNetNuke expects to grow their commercial business in Europe at a faster pace than North America in 2012. Alfresco specifically identified Japan, India and Australia as high priority.
When asked how they plan to enhance their products, the highest priority objectives each at 58% of respondents were:
  • Better Mobile Device and/or Multi-Channel Support
  • Improve General Usability
  • Cloud Support
Other high priority targets at 50% of respondents were Additional APIs / Integration / Platform Features and SaaS Options. Alfresco specifically identified mobile (especially tablet) and the Cloud as their highest priorities, including usability and performance as related to Cloud and SaaS.
When asked specifically what the top two goals are for their projects in 2012, 14 respondents answered:
  • Alfresco: Become a key enabler of enterprise tablet rollouts and offer a successful Cloud service that connects to the Enterprise.
  • Composite C1: Make web CMS more popular via SaaS and "starter wizards," and become the most chosen .NET open source CMS when evaluated by web professionals.
  • DotNetNuke: Social collaboration and deeper Cloud integration.
  • Drupal: Mobile and Drupal distributions (vertical solutions).
  • eZ Publish: Achieve an outstanding user experience "in all dimensions," and enhanced interoperability as a content platform.
  • Hippo: Integrate Apache Rave (a new web and social mashup engine) into Hippo CMS, and add context-aware personalization focused on multichannel behavioral targeting, monitoring, conversion and reporting.
  • HWIOS: Abstract HWIOS into a smaller, easy-to-use library, and create several independent high quality applications around this library.
  • Jahia: Offer a collaboration feature as JahiApp, and add additional mobile and multichannel integration.
  • mojoPortal: Expand adoption and create more add-on products to build revenue.
  • Nuxeo: Broaden adoption and distribution, and offer Nuxeo as a Platform as a Service (PaaS).
  • ocPortal: Continue to lower barriers to building sophisticated websites, and make management of sophisticated websites easy, safe, and fun for small businesses.
  • Umbraco: Release Umbraco version 5 and Umbraco as a service.
  • WeWebU: Achieve broader adoption.
  • XOOPS: Refactor the core framework and update it for PHP 5.4, and consolidate existing modules to convert them to a standard GUI.
We also asked whether the projects anticipated making changes to their development process, or their organization, in 2012. Among the 15 who answered the question, 60% said yes, with many offering explanations:

What's Coming for Open Source CMS in December 2011

Welcome to the November 2011 installment of our what's coming from the open source projects in the next month. If you feel that your project was left out, we invite you to email us at pr@cmswire.com to have a project representative added to the list of people we contact for updates.

Drupal

In November, Drupal (news, site) founder Dries Buytaert along with Jacob Singh and Ron Pruett from Drupal company Acquia (news, site) went to India in order to increase awareness of Drupal there. In the process, they:
  • Organized DrupalCamps to jumpstart local communities.
  • Talked to the large system integrators.
  • Did traditional PR with the media and press.
In answer to the fact that over 3,000 open Drupal positions are available on Indeed.com, and that demand just keeps growing, Acquia announced Acquia U, a "training and employment opportunity for college grads as well as career changers that want to jump into the hot Drupal development market."

Drupal 8

Sensio Labs announces that Drupal 8 CMS will be based on Symfony2 components.

Drupal, the CMS behind millions of websites, including the White House website, is getting a core infrastructure overhaul to optimize its code base. Drupal developers decided to go with an existing open source solution instead of creating a new project. "We decided to use a few components from Symfony2," Drupal creator Dries Buytaert tells CMSWire. "We'll continue to use components from PHP frameworks — not necessarily limited to Symfony2 — where we see a good fit."

Drupal 8

Some other big changes are planned for Drupal 8. Most of the templates and theme functions will be revamped, along with implementing new form input types and elements to convert Drupal to HTML5. In addition to the focus on HTML5, other core initiatives for Drupal 8 include an improved process for designing Drupal themes and improved Drupal core support for using multiple languages for content, structure and interface.

Drupal 8 should also be more mobile-friendly, with responsive themes and improved front-end performance.

DRUPAL Developments: Recent Happenings in the Drupal World

Open Media Foundation (OMF) augments its Drupal resources Open Media Foundation (OMF) is embarking on a third phase of the project to help bring the vision of a collaborative Public Access TV network forward. Adam Mordecai joins OMF as new Director of Special Projects, accompanied by Joe Meersman, a Drupal developer who has been developing nonprofit websites in Drupal for the past year through OMF's Internship Program. Adam and Joe join a strong team of developers at the Open Media Foundation, dedicated to putting the power of media and technology in the hands of the people.

Demand Availability Gap for Drupal Programmer Talent There is a large and increasing market demand for qualified Drupal programmers, Drupal developers and Drupal designers due to growing adoption of the open source social publishing platform, according a press release in marketwatch. Despite a tough economic climate, demand for the Drupal programmer has never been greater, with the job aggregation site indeed[dot]com reporting nearly 3,000 open positions for those with Drupal skills, says the release. Stephanie Birdsall of Arizona State University is reported as saying that there is a real need in the marketplace for training college graduates in Drupal. As a school that heavily invested in Drupal for hundreds of websites, they would like to see the next generation of Drupal programmers, to ensure that Drupal continues to be a robust and well-supported platform.

Drupal 8 CMS to be based on components from PHP frameworks Drupal, the CMS behind millions of websites, including whitehouse[dot]gov, is getting a core infrastructure overhaul to optimize its code base. Drupal developers decided to go with an existing open source solution instead of creating a new project. CMSWire, quoting Drupal creator Dries Buytaert, reported on Nov 9, 2011, that Drupal will (continue to) use components from PHP frameworks -- not necessarily limited to Symfony2. Symfony components are standalone reusable PHP classes. The quality and the numerous possibilities offered by the different Symfony2 components tipped the balance in favor of collaboration between the two communities, according to an announcement. The Drupal community is one of the more active, better-known open source communities.

Drupal Themes

Major changes are on the way for Drupal 8 Drupal 8 CMS is set for major changes, with respect to themes, templates, forms and elements and focus on HTML5, according to a Nov 9, 2011 report on CMSWire. Most of the templates and theme functions are to be revamped. Drupal 8 will be implementing new form input types and elements to convert Drupal to HTML5. Other core initiatives for Drupal 8 include an improved process for designing Drupal themes and improved Drupal core support for using multiple languages for content, structure and interface. Drupal 8 is also expected to be more mobile-friendly, with responsive themes and improved front-end performance.

Dries Buytaert Looks East for Drupal Experts Drupal is doing extremely well in North America and in Europe, Drupal founder Dries Buytaert said last week at the Drupal Singapore meeting at Plug-in@Blk71 speaking to delegates from Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines. (Dries then visited India as well). He said there are hundreds of Drupal firms, all facing the same problem -- finding more Drupal talent. According to Dries, Drupal is doing so well that the lack of Drupal expertise is actually the main thing that is holding Drupal back in the Western world. That is where Dries sees a big opportunity for any country in the world to create pools of Drupal talent. He said wherever you happen to be based in the world, if you are a Drupal expert, you can make money -- probably a lot of money, if you are good.

DrupalCon Denver Scholarships

DrupalCon Denver is just 5 months away. While the organizing team is committed to keeping the event affordable - with a low ticket price of $350 and affordable hotel options - there are even lower cost options for some members of the Drupal community.

DrupalCon Denver Scholarships

The deadline to apply for scholarships for DrupalCon in Denver is tomorrow -- anyone who has not yet applied can do so online until November 18, 2011 midnight Mountain Time. The DrupalCon Denver scholarship program allows community members who would otherwise not be able to attend DrupalCon to benefit from the DrupalCon experience as the Drupal Community benefits from each scholar's attendance. Read about the eligibility requirements and get the link to the online form by visiting DrupalCon Denver's Scholarship webpage.

Sprints at DrupalCon: More glorious than ever

DrupalCon Denver will better highlight and accommodate contribution and code sprints throughout the conference. To support sprints, we're offering a limited number of free attendance tickets. Sprint leads can now register with their proposed focus, and should have a group of at least 3 sprinters together at the time of application. Applicants should be ready to describe in detail the goal (what you plan to improve) and desired outcome (what will be accomplished during the sprint). Sprints can take place at anytime during the conference; they need not happen only on the Friday following the scheduled sessions. Preference is given to sprints that plan for a full day's amount of work, even if it's spread out over several days. Preference is also given to sprints that align with the conference theme or the following categories:
  • Documentation
  • Drupal.org improvements
  • Drupal Core (Drupal 8 Initiatives or Drupal 7 bug fixes)
  • Top contrib projects or community improvements
Applications have already started to roll in. You can apply online as a Sprint Lead. Sprint Lead selections will be announced in January. Check the official DrupalCon Denver website for the latest information.
We are excited that DrupalCon Denver is still very affordable and also able to include even more programs to keep it affordable for the people in our diverse community who need and deserve a little more help.

Drupal Security Team will lead by Greg Knaddison

The Drupal Security Team was originally created in 2005. Though we handled security issues before that, we didn't have a team with proper infrastructure until then. At that time, Károly Négyesi (chx) was the team leader. In July 2006 chx changed his role in the team and I promoted Heine Deelstra to be the security team lead. Heine recently stepped down as the security team lead, and I'm pleased to announce that Greg Knaddison (or greggles on drupal.org) will be filling this role.

Greg has been a consistent member of the security team and both Heine Deelstra, the security team members, and myself unanimously agreed that Greg is the logical person to head the Drupal Security Team.

For those who don't know Greg, Greg helped write our free handbooks on security and wrote a book about Drupal Security. He has also talked about security and Drupal at many DrupalCons. Greg believes in my idea to automate where possible and empower project maintainers. In the coming weeks he will write blog posts to detail some changes made in the last year toward that vision and some tasks that still remain.

As the Drupal Security Team lead, Greg will be the point person for the team. He'll be responsible for coordinating the security team's activities and for making decisions when consensus doesn't arise.

Greg and I agreed on a target of 2 years for him to be in this role. If appropriate, he may continue in this role longer or be replaced before then, but this target helps to set an expectation about the time period. Setting this expectation should help Greg maintain enthusiasm for this role and increase the likelihood that our community will have continuity when that time is up. Greg works at Acquia and will be given 20% of his time to dedicate to the security team (in addition to using his own spare time).

Please join me in thanking Heine for all the great work he did, and in welcoming Greg.

State of Drupal 2011 survey

The last time I organized a State of Drupal survey was in 2008. The results of the 2008 survey were instrumental in shaping Drupal 7 as well as directing the work of the Drupal Association on drupal.org.
Now three years later, I created a new survey. The results of this survey will guide thousands of people in the Drupal community over the next two years.

Take the State of Drupal 2011 survey now.

It shouldn't take more than ten minutes to fill out. Don't worry if you're new to Drupal: every voice counts!
I'll present the results during my DrupalCon keynote in London; the video and the presentation slides will be downloadable after. Please do tell us what you think these days about Drupal: your views will shape Drupal 8 and beyond. Thanks!

Drupal 8 progress to date

  • Canvassed both large Acquia customers as well as the wider Drupal community to identify key strategic initiatives for Drupal 8.
  • Identified “initiative owners” to take point on each of these, and to spread out responsibility/authority among more than just 1-2 people (from Acquia ;)).
    • Greg Dunlap: Configuration Management
    • Larry Garfield: Web Services
    • Jeff Burnz: Design
    • Jacine Luisi: HTML 5
    • Gábor Hojtsy: Multilingual
    • John Wilkins: Mobile
  • Most initiatives have bi-weekly IRC meetings announced at http://groups.drupal.org/drupal-initiatives to provide status updates/assign tasks.
  • Configuration management
        • Content: UUID patch committed which allows unique identifiers to allow for content staging.
      • Next step is refactoring entities to use it.
    • Config: Developed architecture that allows for saving buttons in the admin interface to automatically generate XML files holding configuration data. These can then be moved around with version control. The system intends to replace variable_get/set as well as import/export functionality in Views, Image Styles, etc.
  • Initial prototype code at http://drupal.org/sandbox/heyrocker/1145636
  • Recent sprint at BADCamp with yched, sun, davidstrauss, etc. to talk about how CMI can work with fields in core.
  • Trying to get a couple of pages in core done as “proof of concept”, then initial core patch will follow.

Drupal Community - Klaus Purer

Klaus Purer is a member of the Drupal community who has been recently been extremely active with project applications. How active? In the last 30 days he has commented on almost twice as many projects as the next most prolific commenter. Even though he just got involved in the last month, he's tied for most reviews of the most projects in the last 6 months!

How did you get involved with Drupal?

I started to work with Drupal during my involvement with the students union at the Vienna University of Technology (Fachschaft Informatik) back in 2006. I was just a user at that time, posting articles and keeping the web site up to date. In 2008 I was looking for some work besides my computer science studies and ran into a job advertisement by jpetso. I found it very appealing because it mentioned “actively taking part in an open source project” and since I at least knew Drupal a little it was a great match. So I started at Pro.Karriere (now known as epiqo) as part time Drupal developer, I think I did my first patch for Comment CCK (porting it to Drupal 6). Another boost for my involvement was the Google Summer of Code program in 2009, where I did a project for the Rules module. Fago was a great mentor (and still is today).

Drupal Association Board Election Results for 2011

Earlier this year the Drupal Association began a process to elect and build a new board. In July a call for nominations was made and the community responded with over 50 submissions. The nomination committee spent many weeks reviewing the nominations, following up with potential candidates, until finally submitting a slate of nominees, which was confirmed by the board. I'm happy to announce the new Board of Directors:
  1. Jeff Walpole (until 2014)
  2. Vesa Palmu (until 2014)
  3. Tiffany Farriss (until 2014)
  4. Cary Gordon (until 2013)
  5. Danese Cooper (until 2013)
  6. Mike Woster (until 2013)
  7. Angela Byron (until 2012)
  8. Mitchell Toomy (2012)
  9. Unknown - one open seat, to be filled
The Board also approved Dries Buytaert (me) to fill the "founder role" in this year's Board of Directors.
The Board's term will begin on November 1, 2011. The first meeting of the new Board of Directors will be on November 16, 2011. This will be followed by the Drupal Association Board Retreat in Chicago, December 9 - 11, 2011.

Docs Team 3rd Quarter 2011 update

Hello from Jennifer and Ariane, your friendly Drupal Documentation Team co-leads! It’s time for a quarterly update on what’s happening in the Documentation Team—we've been working on some major restructuring of documentation and the Docs Team since our last update (June 28, 2011), and we'd like to get you up to date on our plans, and other events and news.

Docs restruction

The big news for this quarter is that we are in the midst of some restructuring of the online Drupal documentation, as well as of the Documentation Team itself. Nothing has been completely settled yet, but here is an outline of our plans, reasoning, and links to more information and where you can get involved in the discussion.

Community documentation

The main issue we need to resolve is that the current online documentation on Drupal.org is way too overwhelming for one coordinator to manage. Having one coordinator is a single point of failure, and has led to several past Docs Team leaders getting burned out and leaving the post.

Image Handling in Drupal

Aug. 25, 2011

Note: We recommend sticking with Drupal 6 for these modules. While it might be nice to have a look at a way of doing all of this in 7, we have found that the lack of support and modules makes it too difficult to recommend using 7 for media-heavy sites at the current time.

We all know that Drupal's true power lies in its extensibility. Out of the box, Drupal only comes with a simple upload module and no easy way to dig right in and start building rich media sites. Looking at the drupal.org module list can be a daunting task because of the sheer number of options that you have. Today we're going to look at some of the nicer ways of handling and displaying media on your site. This post will be broken down into 3 parts: Image, Video, and Audio. Today we're starting in with several awesome ways of dealing with images.

Getting started

We will need ways of easily inserting images into our content. To do this we are going to need a few key modules: Views, CCK (along with FileField and ImageField), and some sort of WYSIWYG editor (FCKeditor / CKEditor is a popular choice but you can get access to many options with the WYSIWYG module). CCK will basically allow us to implement images in a consistent way directly from the theme TPL files. Views will allow us to build nice grid layouts of things like galleries. Finally, a WYSIWYG takes care of everything else, allowing us to format and upload images on the fly and move them around content such as blog posts.

Many of the modules featured here will need support from other modules like Image, ImageAPI, and ImageCache. These support modules work behind the scenes to augment image support and allow Drupal to do some pretty powerful processing.

File management

The key to maintaining any media-rich site is being able to archive and review all of your images easily. Many WYSIWYG modules come packaged with their own file management solutions that will display everything in your Drupal files directory. However, let's take a look at some contributed modules that make things really simple for image handling.

Image browser module:
This module has a really nice, clean, compact interface. It is compatible with many WYSIWYG modules like CKeditor, FCKeditor and TinyMCE. It displays uploaded images in a grid and allows you to quickly sort through images by user. The lack of complexity makes Image Browser the ideal solution for sites that don't need the added weight of a multi-directory management system like IMCE. One additional thing I really like Image Browser because it has functionality that will help you align and size images as well as adding your own CSS styles directly from the interface if needed. It is a great no frills / no fuss image management module that you can customize to work perfectly with your theme.

Image Browser

FileField Paths module:
This module is crucial if you are going to be using Filefield, especially on more than one content type. What it essentially does is automate the placement of files within your directory structure. Let's say we have 2 content types: Blog post and Portfolio Image. Each of these has an image field that displays a small thumbnail on the front page so that the user can click and go to the  content page. Normally, the uploader would just place these images into the main Drupal files directory. After 20 blog posts and 15 portfolio images, combined with any other uploads you have done, this directory will become a huge mess of files. FileField Paths allows us to specify criteria for directory creation. I could use this to set all blog-related images to go into the /files/blog directory and the portfolio images into /files/portfolio. I could even get more specific than that, allowing Drupal to create a new folder for each specific node. This is a must for keeping your files organized.

Image Display

CCK is only capable of displaying your images either inline or linked in the actual node. Without modifying the TPL files of your theme, this will become limiting for a site that wants different ways of displaying images. What if we want ways of freeing the display of images, separating the display from the bounds of our current theme?

Lightbox 2:
Lightboxes have been around for a few years, but they are worth a mention. Frequently people forget that their media need not be restrained by their current design. Not all Drupal themes were designed from the ground-up to account for rich media use. In those cases you cant get really nice, large photos. Another side effect is that media embedded directly into the node can suffer from screen resolution limitations. Lightbox solves these problems by making your media show up in a modal window within the browser. The image is sized to the max resolution, and in the instance that the browser window is smaller than that, it resizes the image automatically. There is also the option for the user to make the image max resolution, so you're never limiting the display of your content to any constraints. One further benefit is that since it uses a modal window, your user never has to leave the current page or load a new URL. They can always get back to where they started simple by closing the image. Combine that with other types of media support and the ability to create galleries, Lightbox is the magic bullet of themes with media display problems.

Lightbox

Colorbox
Colorbox is another lightbox module that is more lightweight than Lightbox 2. It also has an official Drupal 7 release, so if you are going to run a production site, this might be a good alternative.

ImageField Crop:
Okay, so I have thumbnails for a particular node appear in a view (e.g a list of blog posts with a uniform thumbnail display). Your default options are pretty limited if you want things to look uniform: pre-format and export all your images using a program like Photoshop (time consuming and limited by users' access to the program), or CSS styling (can result in weird aspect ratios or warped images). You could also install and configure a module like ImageCache, but if you want to allow other users to have some degree of freedom then this can be limiting. Enter ImageField Crop. This modules allows you to upload and image and then crop and resize it to fit within a specific area. Let's say that our blog view has posts with thumbnail preview that are 150px by 150px. After ImageField Crop uploads my selected image (let's say the original is 450px by 280px), I can move and resize the bounding box and get a live preview of the resulting output. The module even saves the original image so you can go back and edit it later.

ImageField Crop

Image Manipulation

We don't always consider some of the amazing things that can be accomplished with PHP modules these days. Drupal has a few modules hanging around that can actually assist and automate some image manipulation tasks. With these, you might just be able to cut Photoshop out of your update rotation...

ImageCache Actions
If you've ever wanted to add borders, watermarks, transparency, or various other tweaks to your images, then this is the module you need. The "Actions" part of this module means you can set up powerful automatic image processing to your uploaded images. This module works best when you want uniform processing on a whole series of images. For example, your users upload images which automatically get a customized site watermark, resized, then placed within a poloroid frame, and placed within a view. In this way you can collect all this content yet ensures uniform display within your theme.
ImageCache Actions
There are a lot of different techniques for working with images within Drupal. I would encourage anyone to go to Drupal.org and check out these modules as well as some of the other offerings from the community. If you find something you like please leave a comment and I'll check it out as well!

Drupal-7 for Tate Museum's "Social Platform" on Revamped Site

The Tate museum group is scrapping the use of HTML code in favour of open source content management platform Drupal and has adopted cloud hosting as part of an overhaul of its website. [Drupal, as a Content Management System, outputs HTML. -Ed.]

The ten-year-old Tate website, which receives over 18 million visitors a year, currently uses hand-coded HTML files. This will be replaced with a Drupal 7-based platform to move the site from a "brochure approach" to a social platform, encouraging debate and interaction about art as well as supporting user-generated content.

John Stack, head of Tate online, said the project to completely overhaul the site has already been two years in the making.

"Tate's website is ten years old and has never had a website re-design. We're in the process of overhauling, updating and re-designing every page and every system powering it," he said.

Stack said a lot of the website is based on hand-coded HTML files, meaning website updates are done manually, which is time-consuming and means only skilled personnel can make changes.

The organization has also made changes to its hosting capabilities to cut costs.

"Previously, we would want to deploy pre-supplied software, such as e-learning and open source software, only to find that we needed specific versions of PHP or MySQL. As it wasn't in the package, we faced additional costs and had to go round the houses to find money. We had no time to wait around, working out what to do with hosting," said Stack.

Tate used "bits of cloud hosting" and decided to re-launch with a new hosting package from service provider NTT Europe called Compute Cloud.

Rob Gethen Smith, information systems director at Tate, said, "The decision to move into the cloud was sparked by plans to refresh the front-end of the main website and ambitious plans to increase online interactions and discussions about art. We wanted a solution that would support our growth and innovation."

Stack believes the changes to Drupal and cloud hosting will help the organization provide a sustainable service for visitors, despite costing "quite a lot of money" in the face of budget cuts.

"The website gets bigger and yet we have less money after the [government's] Comprehensive Spending Review. With the ambition to do more and more, we need a more sustainable solution," he said.

"The choice of NTT and Drupal was all focused on making these things sustainable. The reason for that was Drupal is very mature and has a large community so it's easy to find people to work on the site. It also has a lot of community features for blogging, commenting and user profiles."

The move will also allow Tate to change the focus of its website.

"The site has acted as a brochure for marketing as well as the digitization of 68,000 artworks in the Tate collection. It also provides learning resources and research materials, including audio visual and videos. That's been the focus for four years," said Stack.

He said the museum is now aiming to respond to rapid developments in mobile technology. Visitors will shortly be able to access the site when inside museums. The group hopes to launch a mobile version of its website after the main launch at the end of October, and to add to its portfolio of mobile apps for Apple's iPhone, including games and photos themed around particular exhibitions.

Stack said the organization plans to produce apps for Google's Android operating system in the near future.
"At the moment we have to outsource because our web department specializes in web technologies. It's expensive because the skills are high in demand. But we'll think about bringing [mobile development] skills in-house in the future," he said.

The Tate has a web department of twelve people, six of whom are working on temporary contracts for the website re-launch.

Tate also announced a sponsorship partnership with Vodafone to support a new platform called Tate Debates - a weekly online discussion platform on Tate's blog.

Marc Sands, director of Tate Media, said, "Engaging with a global online audience, as well as our millions of gallery visitors, is an increasingly important part of what Tate does and I am sure our work with Vodafone will open up even more exciting and diverse ways to make this possible."

Rooms: Travel Market Solution in Drupal-7

Drupal Rooms is a booking and room management solution for hotels, vacation rentals and B&Bs

August 10, 2011

Drupal Rooms is a solution for the travel market.

It is a booking and room management solution for hotels, vacation rentals and B&Bs. Rooms is being developed as Drupal 7 only solution.

Drupal Rooms allows an accommodation owner to:
  • Create rooms and assign availability (or on hold states) via a calendar.
  • Define seasons and assigned prices for rooms based on seasons.
  • Create bookings and keep customer records.
  • Make rooms available for booking with a availability search functionality and/ or calendar - handling both immediate bookings and bookings following owner confirmation.

The aim of Drupal Rooms is to make Drupal the go-to platform for building a hotel, bed and breakfast, or vacation rental site. Drupal offers a host of powerful features (media management, social media integration, multi-lingual support, commerce, and others) and the aim is to integrate all those in a package that suits and empowers accommodation owners.

The first step towards that path is resolving the booking issue itself and development on the Rooms module is moving forward at a good pace. Rooms will offer an easy way for accommodation owners to set up rooms, define pricing rules across many variables, as well as accept and manage bookings and payments directly on their website.

    Trends in Content Management Systems

In an effort to cater to customer needs, content programs are changing in new ways thus creating new trends.

Content management systems were developed to make publishing content on a website easy through streamlined automation. However, as content management systems become more complicated, users are realizing that these systems are capable of more than just posting web content. In an effort to cater to customer needs, content programs are changing in new ways thus creating new trends.

    The Four Developing Trends
There are four developing trends in the content management system industry that are furthering along software advances. These include:
    •  Merge of Themes with Extensions
    • Interoperability
    • RDFa
    • Market Fracturing

      Merge of Themes with Extensions
Although the merge of themes with extensions has been slowing developing for many years, the industry is at the point where the combination makes applications run much more smoothly. Design is melting with functionality resulting in there being less of a chance of a content management system becoming too disjointed during development and in the eyes of the end-user.

      Interoperability
As cloud-based computing and semantic architectures become more widely used, interoperability is becoming more feasible. Users demand that websites interact and are compatible with one another. Internet users want to be able to log in with accounts created on other sites and thus access data from other sites within a specific web page. This creates an actual web of content versus a series of tunnels.

      RDFa
Another trend is the creation of programs that automate exactly how data is being structured. Drupal recently launched RDFa into their primary source code so any site running Drupal 7 will be able to take advantage of the flexibility of the new code. Other content management systems are create extensions that automate data structuring. More businesses will take advantage of semantic crawlers and easier organization.

      Market Fracturing
Finally, as themes and extensions become one, talented web designers will begin building their own content management systems. Designers will need to be knowledgeable in design and function. Therefore, once designers realize the amount of potential behind the combination of cloud and semantic architectures, the market will become fractured.

The noticeable trend amongst content management systems is the merging of all aspects to truly create a world wide web. Improving code and automating specific functions will certainly further develop this trend in future platforms. Content management systems are continuously developing projects that help to expand the Internet while further connecting its users to one another.
